At midnight, as we ushered in the fifth of November George W. Bush went up in flames. It was the culmination of the first inaugural Guy Fawkes party. The basis for this new American holiday can be found in Bonfire Night, celebrated in the UK. In typical American fashion, however, we celebrate Fawkes' revolutionary intention rather than his failure and capture, as the Brits do. In all, three effigies were burned.
Food, drink, fellowship and political discourse abounded. I encourage all of you to "Remember, remember the fifth of November, the gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot." We hope for bigger, better and more flammable Guy Fawkes festivities in the future.
